Nagarmotha is the Hindi name traditionally given to several aromatic Cyperus species, including Cyperus rotundus and Cyperus scariosus, hardy sedge plants that grow in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions worldwide. A member of the sedge grass family, our Nagarmotha is sustainably wild harvested from West Bengal, India where Cyperus species grow abundantly and vigorously. In India alone, there are over 50 species of Cyperus, with many hundreds growing worldwide. The essential oil offered here is derived predominantly from the dried rhizome roots of Cyperus scariosus, yielding an amber-red oil with a warm, woody and earthy, resinous aroma with a sweet spiciness. Reminiscent of myrrh, vetiver, soft vanilla and subtle liquorice notes. Nagarmotha has a long-lasting aroma which lends itself well as a fixative base in exotic and resinous blends. In ethnobotanical traditions, Cyperus roots have long been associated with the abdominal and digestive systems.

Nagarmotha is a traditional name applied to several Cyperus species native to the Indian subcontinent and surrounding regions. While Cyperus rotundus is widely referenced in classical herbal literature, the richly aromatic, resinous oils traditionally prized in perfumery are most closely associated with Cyperus scariosus.Cyperus species are robust, tenacious plants with extensive underground rhizome systems and grow vigorously in suitable conditions. The rhizomes of Cyperus scariosus are woody and fibrous, yielding an essential oil valued for its depth, warmth and fixative qualities in natural perfumery and incense traditions.
Ayurvedic medicine uses: Musta, also mustak, mustaka & tunga mustala are the names used for Cyperus rhizomes in Ayurvedic medicine. Cyperus roots are described in classical Ayurvedic texts, including the Charaka Samhita (c. 1st century CE), and have traditionally been associated with the digestive and abdominal systems. In contemporary Ayurvedic practice, these roots are valued for their harmonising and grounding qualities.
In traditional Chinese medicine:Cyperus rotundus is well known as a Qi-regulating herb in Chinese medicine, where it is referred to as xiang fù or xiang fùzi. The term xiang means fragrant, often used to describe aromatic substances such as culinary spices, perfumes and incenses. The character fù is the same as that used to describe aconite (fuzi); the term was likely used because the appearance of Cyperus rhizomes reminded herbalists of aconite roots.
